One more package question - cups

I've installed print/cups from source, and it appears to have been 
properly installed.  I can connect to the cups admin service via web 
browser.

I've added a printer, and the admin service says "Deskjet_2540_series 
(Idle, Accepting Jobs, Not Shared, Server Default)".

Yet when I try to print, nothing happens.  I requested a "Test Page" 
from the cups web service, and it says it sent it.  It even reports a 
completed job for the queue.  Yet nothing shows up on the device.

Similar failure when trying to print a file from shell command (ie, 
using /usr/bin/pkg/lpr $file) - a job is created and completes, but 
nothing goes to the printer.
