I did have Gnome built against XFree86 not so long ago, and it was
working too I think
I'd still like to know some more concrete reasons as to what exactly is
missing or conflicting.
As far as I know pkgsrc adds any potentially the missing stuff itself
anyway.

Hmmm... that's not a very useful set of terms as descriptive terms.
For that distinction they may as well be called "1" and "2", though
"modular" is the most wrong term there. "pkgsrc" (or maybe
"pkgsrc-x11") would be better. No wonder I've been confused.
After all, "native" _is_ (for these purposes) Modular Xorg in netbsd-5
and newer!
