What exactly do you mean by 'dropped': a) no longer used by default by gcc;
b) entirely removed from the system; c) something else? b) doesn't seem
plausible (to me at least). Maybe on amd64 it will be entirely replaced by
lib32 and lib64, but there're arch's where /usr/lib makes perfect sense. i386
is 32-bit only, so what use is having lib32, much less lib64?

Just curious.
