Thanks for reply
I've now a little more info now I have working gnome for 
comparison.

Build of 2008q4 packages all on 5.0_BETA vs the 2008q3 packages
being mostly when on 4.99.63

'/usr/pkg/sbin/gdm' just returns to the prompt.

'ps ax' was just showing gdm-binary and nothing in /var/run

I suspect there is some authentication problem from a diff of
Xorg.0.log below.
