Yes, I can sign things with no trouble. And as best I can tell, the
message isn't coming from gpg but from gpgme via libgpg_error, and I
sure can't find anything in there that looks like it.
I'll try the single-step solution or some such.

I was about to post a message saying I'd just seen that mentioned on
the sylpheed mailing list, when I noticed the name looked familiar...
