 I vaguely remember it cascades from freetype in base being too old
 (2.6.3 on the -8 branch), so it must pull in freetype from pkgsrc and
 so a duplication is unavoidable (as it also is e.g. for openssl too).
 
 I slightly perfer duplication (new package vs older base component) to
 not being able to use emacs :)
