The option "pdf" is currently without a function in graphics/gnuplot. It will trigger the build of pdflib-lite, which is then not used by gnuplot. configure complains about

configure: WARNING: unrecognized options: --with-pdf

and the gnuplot binary is identical with or without the option. The presence of PDF support is solely determined by including cairo support, i.e. option "-cairo" will result in a gnuplot without the ability to export PDF files - which isn't very obvious either.
