 Have you also passed `INSTALL_UNSTRIPPED=yes'? (hopefully just:
 
  % cd pkgsrc/graphics/gegl
  % env INSTALL_UNSTRIPPED=yes CFLAGS=-g make replace
 
 will be enough)
