I deleted the offending lines.

Now I get similar results with getaddrinfo()

One other thing too:  my getaddrinfo wasn't able to find "germ",
the name returned by calls to `hostname'.

I added it to my /etc/hosts and it seemed to do the trick,
however gtk-gnutella still hangs :(
