Is it even possible to install the two versions together (without
hacking them up a lot...)? If not, there's no point trying to massage
 the packaging.

Well... any conflicts that appear are handled by pkg_install, but that
doesn't happen until you've compiled and try to install. So for cases
people are likely to trip on (especially with large packages) it's
nice to set the explicit CONFLICTS too so it fails early.
