"png" is a non-default option to "freetype2". Is it possible that you
built freetype2 without that option, and then changed your defaults
 afterwards?

 I.e. does the output from:

    pkg_info -Q PKG_OPTIONS freetype2

 ... include "png"?

If not, then freetype2 was build before the "png" option was specified.
The solution then is to rebuild freetype2.
