 Sigh. Does either make -V BUILTIN_X11_TYPE.native or make show-var
 VARNAME=BUILTIN_X11_TYPE.native print anything nonempty? And after it
 fails (at what stage does it fail? right away?), if work/.*_makevars.mk
 files exist, do they contain a setting for BUILTIN_X11_TYPE?
 
 and is BUILTIN_X11_VERSION.native getting set?
