Looking back at the libtool commands and output, it appears that the
 include-dir directive:

    -I${WRKOBJDIR}/graphics/freetype2/work/freetype-2.4.2/include

(where ft2build.h resides) was in the original

    libtool --mode=compile ...

command, but was omitted when libtool actually ran the compiler.
