 Someone should please close this PR - since it was filed, vlc08
 started building again (ie: someone fixed the problem, but either
 didn't notice, or in any case, didn't close, this PR).
 
 vlc08 is broken again in the same environment, but in a different way,
 a new PR will be forthcoming for the current problem.
