 Glancing at the code briefly my guess is that there is (or maybe once
 was) a way to get to the close-the-screen code before the
 open-the-screen code. So the "right" fix is probably to keep track of
 whether curses has been initialized.
 
 Anyway, could you send this issue upstream?
