"ding ding ding" -- we have a winner.  Take out the line, and things 
work just fine.  I'd added that line eons ago as a workaround for 
some package that was trying to build with -Werror but which was 
badly broken...  

I'll close the PR.  Thanks (to all) for helping figure this out.
