Long ago, xchat's text backend was switched from xft to pango by PR 20387.
But when chat/xchat was update to 2.8.0 by reed@: (from commit log)

Yes, it completely break with GTK2+Quartz on Mac OS :-<, X11-less.

I asked to reed@ why it was switched to xft backend three months ago,
 but no respond yet.

If there are any reason to use xft, swith to --disable-xft on Darwin,
 or introduce xft option?
But no reason, how about switch to --disable-xft on all platforms?
(No need to specify --disable-xft, it is default value for xchat's configure).
