 It looks like $LOGNAME is set by default (according to the login(1) man
 page), $USER isn't necessarily, from what I can see.  (I just tried it
 out on my OpenSolaris image.)  I checked the online versions of Solaris
 man pages that FreeBSD has on their site, and it looks like $LOGNAME is
 consistently available, at least back to SunOS 5.5.1.
