>Originator: Dave Barnes
>Release: NetBSD 4.0
>Organization:
Consultant
>Environment:
Happens on all systems on at least two arch i386 and cobalt.
>Description:
NetBSD 4.0 and Samba-3.0.26 work fine with Windows XP clients. But trying the
same thing with a NetBSD client will panic smbd and can occasionally panic the
kernel.
>How-To-Repeat:
(PizzaHut:root) /mnt $mount -t smbfs //djb@thincrust/NetBSD /ThinCrust/NetBSD
(PizzaHut:root) /mnt $cd /Thin*
(PizzaHut:root) /ThinCrust $cd Net*
(PizzaHut:root) /ThinCrust/NetBSD $ls

gets this on the server (ThinCrust)
Mar 26 00:01:06 ThinCrust /netbsd: pid 105 (smbd), uid 0: exited on signal 6
(core not dumped, err = 1)
Mar 26 00:01:22 ThinCrust /netbsd: pid 107 (smbd), uid 0: exited on signal 6
(core not dumped, err = 1)

and this in the server smbd log
[2008/03/26 00:01:06, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(1632)
  PANIC (pid 105): push_ascii - dest_len == -1
[2008/03/26 00:01:06, 0] lib/util.c:log_stack_trace(1786)
unable to produce a stack trace on this platform
[2008/03/26 00:01:06, 0] lib/fault.c:dump_core(181)
  dumping core in /var/log/cores/smbd
[2008/03/26 00:01:21, 0] smbd/server.c:main(944)

Note that only NetBSD clients cause this PANIC, Windows XP works fine. Problems
with NetBSD smbfs? Exactly the same behaviour whether client is i386 or
cobalt. Also fails in exactly the same fashion whether server is i386 or
cobalt.
>Fix:
? Worked previously with Samba 3.0.22 and NetBSD 3.0

Notice that Debian is seeing something similar with Samba and smbfs type. They
suggest using new cifs filesystem type.

Has smbfs been deprecated?
