 You were correct.   This was a local issue.  I downloaded the 2007Q4 pkgsrc 
 tarball and redid the build.  Everything worked fine.
 
 For some reason I haven't figured out, I was missing directories in 
 libarchive/files.
 
 Please close this PR.  Sorry for any trouble caused.
