 I still have a problem.
 
 I didn't mention in my ticket (but did mention in my mail) that the 
 pkg-config files also have references to libtool .la files.
 
 From looking at 345 pkgconfig .pc files on different operating systems, 
 only these QT4 pkgconfig files have .la references.
 
 As far as I know, pkgconfig files should not reference libtool files. This 
 breaks programs that depend on .pc files but aren't using libtool.
