"We" ...  Well, send me patches and I'll be happy to review them.

It does for me, and it does for others.  Please provide more details than
"it doesn't work", e.g. show me the output of "ls -lR ${OPENLDAP_VARDIR}"
and "${PREFIX}/libexec/slapd -u slapd -d -1" on your fresh install to show
me *what* is wrong.
