 IIRC, it's just a matter of setting:
 
 # Use shlibtool so we don't build static library archives for the
 # shared modules.
 #
 USE_LIBTOOL=           yes
 SHLIBTOOL_OVERRIDE=    ${LIBTOOL_OVERRIDE}
