Referencing pkg/27667, I'm thinking the problem is with mysql4-client and not 
mysql{,4}-server. Using mysql-server with mysql4-client, at least the databases 
are seemingly accessible for now. We'll see...

        make mysql4-client and mysql-server. Start mysqld via 
${PKG_SYSCONFDIR}/rc.d/mysqld, then run mysql_secure_installation.
