Did you create the FS on Linux with mke2fs? Because NetBSD's newfs_ext2fs(8)
doesn't support adding that feature (dir_index) from what I can see. While it
looks like the ext2 implementation in NetBSD _does_ handle `dir_index', the
ext2(5) man-page on Linux says:

       dir_index
              Use hashed b-trees to speed up name lookups in large directories.
              This feature is supported by ext3 and ext4 file systems, and is
              ignored by ext2 file systems.
```

If I were you, I'd create ext2 filesystems using NetBSD's own tool rather than
Linux's for maximum compatibility. I've had kernel panics with some of the
default `base_features' which are in use now (see /etc/mke2fs.conf on Linux).
