You might try using the rump option to mount, or to see if there are
fuse ext2fs implementations.  Perhaps between code reading and
experiments you can find the bug.

My own approach is not to use ext2fs :-)

Actually I see occasional hangs with rsync to FFS-formatted external drives.
So we can't rule out a USB issue.

I am also doing the same rsync backup to a FFS USB drive with no problems at all (at the moment)
