!!! always learning. I didn't realise the error in my nomenclature.
Seems what I actually have is in the pi3 department is 
Raspberry Pi 3 Rev 1.2

and wasn't aware the 3+ variant had a notional 1Gbit 
(though limited to usb3 speeds) (also has 1.4GHz cpu)
