The kernel will use whatever the BIOS/UEFI tells it.

I'm not sure what you mean with "was busy". You can query the amount
of memory with:

sysctl hw.physmem64

It is also printed by the kernel (and visible e.g. in /var/run/dmesg.boot)
like (here a thinkpad with 8GB):

total memory = 8075 MB
avail memory = 7784 MB
