Should this be xzcat?

    cat /path/to/disk/image.raw.xz |..

If so, I think it should be possible to use a format like qcow2 to create
an image of larger notional size in a smaller file and convert it into raw
on stdout - thus allowing me to use a VPS with modest disk space for this
exercise?
