Have you tried using about:preferences to change the font? You might also check to see what (if any) theme you're using on windows -as well as plug-ins.

Some things can be changed pretty easily such as showing the bookmark toolbar by default. Other things may depend on the window manager you're using in X.

While I'm not sure what you exactly have in mind; I think most of the cosmetic issues can be fixed in other ways (preferences, themes, plugins) instead of recompiling.
