How do you make use of amd64/binary/kernel/netbsd-GENERIC.symbols.gz ?

(e.g., I guessed

(gdb) symbol-file netbsd-GENERIC.symbols 
`/usr/export/amd64/netbsd-GENERIC.symbols': can't read symbols: File format not recognized.
