I think this is a chicken and egg problem.
BSD developers don't use their systems for development
because they lack support for modern hardware.
BSD systems lack support for hardware because developers don't use
their systems for development.

I don't know too much about usability of MacOS-X but Linux
is much more comfortable as a workstation than NetBSD
mainly because of too much problems with drivers.
I talk not about consumers, but about developers and power users.
