Try something that uses the ixgbe driver.

Wow, where did you get a 82597 controller? That's PCI-X and pretty darn
old. I think it does ~600Mpps if you're lucky (or was it 300?) because
of PCI-X bus limitations. A newer 10G controller is the 82599, which is
still a couple of years old so the problems should be fairly well known
(x520 adapters).

Docs for the 82599 are on http://www.intel.com/go/ethernet and, btw,
that's my day job.
