Re: which mid-sized servers are best for NetBSD-5.1?

Hello Greg. We're using servers containing the Supermicro ML1081
motherboard with onboard BMC IPMI management. The server I most recently
set up had 12GB of RAM and 2 4-quad CPUs in it. I was able to install
NetBSD-5.1, built from source because the binary distribution isn't new
enough to support the onboard Intel wm(4) ethernet chip, without laying a
hand on the machine. My colleague racked it up, and I took it from the
shipping carton to a fully functional xen-based production server using
ipmi tools, pxeboot and some custom built install images.
The system we bought came from IXSystems, but I imagine this
motherboard is available world-wide and provides the same functionality and
compatibility no matter what case it's in. It has 2 GigE ethernet
interfaces, plus the BMC ethernet interface. I believe it has hardware
raid capability, but we're not using that. I'm using raidframe with a
couple of mirrored disks, since our instalation didn't require that level
of sophistication.
Here is the dmesg output from the machine when it boots NetBDS-5.1 in
native hardware mode, as opposed to xen dom0 mode. I initially had some
trouble with the ethernet interfaces, but since I've given up the idea that
hardware flags for udp and tcp checksum offload work with our driver
and this chip, all has been well.
