Keep Alive on W-LAN

I have been searching the manuals, but I cannot find out how to keep
my w-lan alive
without starting an ad-hoc script, sending an internal ping now and then.
.
Have I missed something.  I am running wpa_supplicant and dh-client on
a USB ral(4).

If a handle esists, can someone please give me a handle.
