i've also run into problems with a laptop roaming on wireless/wired 
networks and the subsequent decisions on which interface to use.

Maybe you want to try something with ifwatchd like hubertf proposed in 
his blog :

I've used his idea of to tell the running dhcpcd to reconfigure the 
ip-stack and therefore deprecated the assumption that network 
connectivity has to be available at boot time.
dhclient seems to be somewhat bitchy when it comes to more "dynamic" 
environments ^^
