mt remote operation not working

I have 2 machines running netbsd-5, from late-May. One machine has a tape drive /dev/st0 and I'm trying to control the tape drive from the other machine. Host "aster" has the tape drive...

aster# mt status
SCSI tape drive, residual=0
ds=3<Mounted>
er=0
blocksize: 0 (0, 0, 0, 0)
density: 64 (0, 0, 0, 0)
current file number: 0
current block number: 0

----------------------------------------

maat # export RCMD_CMD=ssh
maat # mt -f aster:/dev/nrst0 status
exec: No such file or directory
mt: aster:/dev/nrst0: Input/output error

maat # export TAPE=aster:/dev/nrst0
maat # mt status
exec: No such file or directory
mt: aster:/dev/nrst0: Input/output error

... is something busted in mt/rmt?

Louis
