I'll admit to having a relatively poor understanding of where AMD can
actually provide some of the benefits its proponents claim for it. I
have an even poorer understanding of how it can interact badly with
various situations and cause problems.

Erez Zadok's amd book <isbn://0782127398> is a big help with serious amd installations, shedding light on both concepts and configuration fine print.

You are of course right that amd cannot undo shortcomings of the file-systems it uses.
