My experience on my laptop with external firewire disks is not that
great. They often get stuck in a timeout waiting for some command that
got lost, that takes a minute each time before it retries. It can be
some hours before it happens the first time, but then the intervals tend
to become shorter. It's rather useless, actually.

Overall, I wonder if the USB-1 that my laptop offers as alternative
isn't effectively faster.
