I have also seen this with Sun (esiop) controllers and Seagate drives with
SX (not ST) firmware.  I've not been able to try the drives with any other
controller.

Same issue with a 36 GB Cheetah on mac68k (Quadra 650):

The disk ran fine in synchronous mode on an sbus fas(4) card.
