There is 'Dovecot SASL' in the postfix distribution, it is server
only (i.e.: it allows clients to authenticate against you) and
uses the dovecot authentication daemon as a backend.

btw, thanks a bunch. Installed dovecot (and switched to it for imap) and now everything "just works". Clearly I was fighting with it and didn't realize.
