So far, I've found two places where TLB entry invalidation (invlpg)
lets the system boot, after which it appears stable.
The first place is in pmap_install_ptp(), which helps with the
originally reported crash.
The second one is in pmap_enter_ma(), where it helps avoid the crash at:
pmap_pte_cas(ptep, opte, npte) !=3D opte
(https://nxr.netbsd.org/xref/src/sys/arch/x86/x86/pmap.c?r=3D1.429#5183).
In theory, for the second case, invalidating the TLB entry for some
unrelated address also seems to help. For example, adding:
pmap_update_pg((vaddr_t)pmap_enter_ma); at
https://nxr.netbsd.org/xref/src/sys/arch/x86/x86/pmap.c?r=3D1.429#5130
outside the loop also seems to work. However, this is harder to explain.
It probably invalidates more memory addresses or has some other side effect=
.
At present, I can't tell what is causing this. It may be related to
the recursive nature of memory access in the NetBSD implementation.
Potentially, FreeBSD and Linux use direct addresses instead.
I also don't know whether this is a CPU erratum, some implementation
quirk, or simply an existing issue that is more visible on this CPU.
I am reluctant to apply the patch without fully answering the
questions above, but perhaps this could be treated as an erratum and
guarded by CPUID.
Alternatively, it could be guarded by SMAP support.
So far, AMD/Intel users don't seem to have reported or observed this
issue, or at least I haven't been able to find a similar PR.
I also haven't tested this under heavier memory pressure yet.
I would appreciate comments on the patch, as well as any ideas or
suggestions on how to proceed.
