 We are at 397, and this might be a bug that was introduced in 390 and
 fixed in 407, if I correctly read

 (I'm just skimming, so I may be mistaken).  The workaround - from that
 debian bug - is to 
 
   tput rs2
 
 after switching via manu to utf-8
