Just grasping at straws: could you maybe try your test again with a
completely different brand of SD card?

I wonder if something is wrong with access to the SD card (could be
anything from driver bugs to dtb bugs in the clocks data that makes
speed/timing negotiaton go wrong).

I did try two different sdcards (8gb & 32 gb) - they were both generic ones.

I will get a couple of samsung ones and do a bit more testing later next week. I think your concerns are valid as I have had issues in the past with duff cards which superficially seem OK.
