Sorry for omitting this in the initial report.
Here is the relevant error message:

My host environment is setup to support POSIX.1-2008, SUSv4 (see
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E88353_01/html/E37853/standards-7.html)
My PATH is:
PATH=/usr/xpg7/bin:/usr/xpg6/bin:/usr/xpg4/bin:/usr/bin
The version of awk picked up is /usr/xpg4/bin/awk
