 note that the hardware hang was shortly diagnosed as being
 unrelated to amdgpu..  see my next reply to this PR:

 ... and then desecription of soft-hang of mpv, and the same
 original corruption.  ie, this PR.  there's no other problem
 to make a new PR for..
 
 right now i have a 5450 installed, but i'll put the RX550
 back in and see what the latest status is.
