No, they wouldn't, they're not the source. Something else would be, early
in the xterm's lifetime, and most probably only once.
There's also no point searching for the tab setup if the problem doesn't
happen - in that case, nothing will have set the xterm tabs, and it all works.

If you don't resize the terminal, then unless the tabs we set to
a very unusual set of values (which isn't going to happen by accident)
there should be no problem, setting every 8th column (the likely
candidate) is going to be every 8th column up to the current terminal
width.
