 The igphy hunch appears to be correct:
 
 uc> disable igphy
 igphy* disabled
 
 ukphy1 at wm1 phy 1: OUI 0x005500, model 0x0039, rev. 0
 ukphy1: 10baseT, 10baseT-FDX, 100baseTX, 100baseTX-FDX, 1000baseT, 1000baseT-FDX, auto
 
 and the computer is much happier.
