I've done another build, with the "deep" path, but -P added:

export DESTDIR=/var/lib/laminar/run/netbsd-sun2-m68000/3/dest-sun2-m68000
./build.sh -P -U    -O /var/lib/laminar/run/netbsd-sun2-m68000/3/obj -m sun2 -a m68000 tools
./build.sh -P -U -u -O /var/lib/laminar/run/netbsd-sun2-m68000/3/obj -m sun2 -a m68000 release

$PWD should be /var/lib/laminar/run/netbsd-sun2-m68000/3/NetBSD-src
(containing the "src" repo) at that point. But that build failed, too.
So the next round for sun2 will be with the recent NDEBUG patch.
