It's not straight forward. I used the whole disk partition as the label
this time, rebooted and the cgd device came up. So, I tried with /dev/cgd0
as the label again, rebooted and the cgd device came up. So, I found that
the discrepancy is that the 'cgdconfig -C' command succeeds with /dev in
the label, in both cases, when it is run via /etc/rc.d/cgd during boot, *bu=
t*
when I run it manually after boot (with CGD=3DNO in /etc/rc.conf), it fails
in both cases. I must have just tried the '/dev/cgd0' case last time from
the command line after boot. Anyway, ktrace files of both fail cases on
the command line after boot are attached.
So, it seems that there is something else involved that allows 'cgdconfig -=
C'
to succeed when the cgd.conf file prepends /dev to the label, but fail
after boot completes. Strange.
Christos suggested prepending /dev thusly as well; either that or changing
the name of the params file to something other than cgd0, as you also
suggested as well. And, he also commented, "I don't know what business has
cgdconfig running chdir(2); seems bogus to me." And, I agree, regarding
which I replied...
"It seems to me that cgdconfig is trying to be too smart then and ending up
being braindead instead. Why is it calling opendisk(3) on a *regular* file
that's not even in /dev just because it happens to "notice" it exists and is
similarly named to the actual device? It seems that it is getting "confuse=

by its inappropriate assumptions about a mere label and associated mere
parameter file and thus trying to open a regular file, not even under /dev,
as a device (without so much as checking if this "discovered" file even
actually is a device). Furthermore, all this in spite of the fact that the
*target* in the config file is clearly identified as /dev/ld0b [sic; it was=

an obvious component of /dev/ld0d, of course. What's the point of even
defining the actual target there if that information is going to be ignored
based on assumptions about mere labels? All of this sure sounds like a bug=
in
cgdconfig to me. As you've said yourself, naming the parameter file cgd0 "=
is
OK" (which I was indeed careful to verify before so doing). The first field
in the config file is a mere label, and prepending a /dev to it is needless=
ly
confusing and *should* not be required for things to actually work. I guess
I can live with appending a .params to my params file (or otherwise changing
its name), if I must, but it seems to me that I should not have to do so. =

seems to me like a bug in cgdconfig. But, yes, I agree that the likely
inadvisable chdir(2) is a least contributing to the problem. However, while
it may not technically be a bug in opendisk(3) for it to try to open regular
files, it sure seems like it would be a wise feature for it to at least che=
ck
if a file to be opened is either a block or character special file before
doing so, and passing the reason for such failures/refusals back to the
user. I mean, it's called openDISK, after all (lol)."
So, I don't think it should by looking to find device files in /etc/cgd (for
apparently no good reason) at all, and that if it didn't, it wouldn't get
device confused by the file names there. But, what do I know? :)

Hmm. I think maybe you meant to write, "/dev/cgd0 and then /dev/rcgd0,"
otherwise, I'm confused. But, shouldn't it look explicitly in the /dev
directory? That's where these devices always are, right? And certainly
never in /etc/cgd, right?
Regarding the "raw" vs. "cooked" thing, I'm not sure I understand you.
Are you referring to the cgd device or the underlying disk device there?
And, regardless, I don't see that reflected in cgdconfig(8), but I'll
take your word for it, however it's meant. Also, speaking of cgdconfig(8),
note that its config file example doesn't show preprending a /dev to the
cgd device label.
